Frequencies and the EQ

Equalization and the Parametric EQ

Equalizing - the balancing of frequency signals in an electronic signal/frequency

Why is it important?
Using the equalizer is important in music production. The EQ allows you to get rid of unwanted sounds. For example, some kick drums and have an airy sound, which is usually heard in the old school hip-hop kicks. Some producers want to get rid of this sound, so they use the equalizer to lower the certain frequencies, which helps them get the sound they want.

The different frequencies
We have low-end frequencies, mid-range frequencies, and hi-end frequencies. Low-end frequencies are the deep sounds we hear. For example, imagine the feeling and sound of a heavy bass. These are always strong low-end signals. In mid-range signals, we expect to hear most of the sound we get from vocals and hard sounds. For example, the sound of a clap would have a strong signal in the mid-range. At the high-end frequency range, we expect to hear hi-hat sounds. If you're not familiar with hi-hats then what we mostly hear at the high-end are the "tssh" sounds or hissing sounds that we hear.

When equalizing sounds, we want to level out these sounds. That's what the parametric equalizer is for. It allows us to control which frequencies on the grid by allowing us to strengthen or weaken the different frequencies that pass through the signal. The reason for this is to increase the quality of the sound, an unleveled signal will not sound as great as a leveled sound, there will be a sense of unbalanced when you listen to it.

In all equalizers, there are different bands. Bands are the notches your move to control the frequency. You move the band up, you increase, you move it down, you decrease. Most equalizers have a visual graph to show you where the sound is passing through. I would recommend using your ear when listening to the frequencies. Listening out for these frequencies is the best way, this is SOUND production. Doing this will help improve the accuracy of mixing and you need to have a good ear for this.

FL Studio and the EQ

When mixing an instrumental in FL Studio, you need to mix the different instruments and level each of them out. This is when the Parametric Equalizer comes to use. Don't understand it? Okay, if you had 2 different snare drums in one track hitting at the same time, you would have to strengthen the frequencies you want to keep from each instrument. Then you must decrease the hertz you don't want and find a balance between the instruments, meaning they should sound leveled This is done for many reasons. One reason is that similar frequencies coming from different instruments can clash, which can lead to a certain frequency being too strong, or one sound from an instrument drowning out another. So for example, hi-hats produce sound at the high-end, imagine we have two hi-hats which sound different but hit at the same time. It would be hard to differentiate which instrument is which wouldn't it? This is when the EQ comes in, balancing out both instruments and providing separating different hertz so you can hear the difference.
